  T&M U.K. SUBS NEWSFEED 2022...

The U.K. Subs have parted company with their drummer ‘Magic’ Dave Humphries.
Charlie, Alvin and Steve would like to thank ‘Magic’, who was in the band for just over a year, for all his hard work and to wish him all the very best for the future…

An announcement about the band’s new drummer will be made in the new year.

Below is Dave's social media announcement about his departure...

"What a great tour to end with. Every gig has been great and thank you Manchester for making my last Subs gig another great one. I've absolutely loved being a part of this band.
In the past 13 months I've played 78 gigs in 6 different countries, met some of my idols, some of my influences, some of my influences influences, made some great new friends and gained some extra very valuable touring experience.
I've managed to make it on to a UK Subs recording (yet to be released) and make my mark in this legendry punk band's history. But now it's time to look forward to 2023, move on to my next chapter and make way for the 87th UK Subs member.

UK SUBS , Thanks for having me.
UK Subs fans, thanks for accepting me.

U.K. Subs 1980 - click to enlarge13/10: STEVE ROBERTS R.I.P.

It is with a deep sense of shock and sadness that we’ve received the news that Steve Roberts has passed away.

Steve joined the U.K. Subs in 1980 and it’s his superb muscular drumming that can be heard on the classic albums Diminished Responsibility and Endangered Species.

He was by general acclaim considered to be one of the best drummers to have played for the band and it’s a tragedy that his musical talent never got to fulfil its enormous potential.

The U.K. Subs wish to collectively send condolences to the family and friends of Steve at this distressing time.

Alvin has posted the following message on social media regarding a new beginning for his solo band Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants:

"Despite being super-busy with the U.K. Subs this summer, my compulsion to play yet more live shows has led me to arrange a trio of gigs here in France for my other outfit, The Disobedient Servants. As a direct consequence of the Covid curse, we’ve not been able to perform on a stage going right back to our Rebellion Festival appearance of 2019. Realising it was therefore long overdue, I decided to get the collective together to make some loud Garage rock noise in a live environment, starting here in my home part of the world, south-west France. Unfortunately, Servants' regular Leigh Heggarty is unable to make this threesome due to his commitments next month to The Ruts; but I’m delighted to announce that The Saints’ guitarist, Barry ‘Barrington’ Francis will be deputising for him and joining myself and ex-The Selecter and Godfathers’ axe player ‘Soho’ Steve Crittall for these shows. We will also be debuting our new Parisian drummer, Christophe Sauniere. All three gigs are in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Charente regions of France and are no more than an hour’s drive from each other. I’m therefore hoping that my French Facebook buddies and any UK ones who may be holidaying in the south-west of France in August will get themselves along to one or more of these concerts, all of which will be free entry – just buy a few beers or a couple glasses of wine to keep the venue owners happy. Here’s the details…

25th August – Pub Gabariers: rue des Gabariers, 16210 Saint-Simeux

26th August – Bar Flore: 7 Avenue de la Gare, 16210 Chalais

28th August – Barbacane: Place Ludovic Trarieux 16390 Aubeterre-sur-Dronne"

The U.K. Subs are scheduled to headline a special gig in aid of the Sheffield Hunt Saboteurs via their PUNKS AGAINST THE HUNT 22 gig being held at the Trades Club, Barnsley, on Friday 30 September.

T&M recently spoke to Subs guitarist Steve Straughan about his (and our) sheer abhorrence of fox hunting and why it means so much to him and the band to help support the hunt saboteurs' cause. Steve also does a lot to help animals in need via promoting and donating to the excellent Facebook auction site 'Pawz for thought charity gig auction', which can be found at: - they auction music related items given by musicians, artists and kind people, with all the money raised going to the brilliant Pawz For Thought animal shelter group in Sunderland.

Here's Steve's thoughts on why the Subs are playing the forthcoming Punks Against The Hunt show...

"It's great to be given the opportunity to play a gig which helps to protect our wildlife. For those of us who care about animals, and those of us who are appalled and disgusted by what people do to animals in the name of sport, it's so good to help. Unfortunately, a lot of people in the world today live in a bubble from the misinformation they are told or read. Fox hunting still happens today despite it being banned. The evil and barbaric ones amongst us have a strong bloodthirsty lust to kill and are quite happy to break the law to get what they want. They are protected by the police in most cases. Whenever the hunt sabs are out there helping foxes against the hunt and the evil terrier men, they are constantly slowed down by the police. This is to help the deranged people of the hunt. Shocking, I know, but this is what happens up and down the country. People in high places like judges and chiefs of police constantly look after these out of date, hooligan criminals. This is why it's so important to help the fantastic hunt sabs in their work. Many of you won't realize that the Sabs are out there in the fields when many of us are still in bed. They risk their lives protecting animals. In my opinion the work they do is incredible. We must give them our support. I will always look up to the people who defend animals till the day I die. Love and respect to all..."

First of all, happy new year to you all ❤️
Thanks for everyone's concern about Charlie, regarding him getting covid at the end of the last tour, which finished just over 3 weeks ago.
A couple of days after we came home, Charlie started coughing.
The next day, he did a LFT (home test in UK) and it showed up as positive.
So we both did a PCR test, but unfortunately, they managed to lose our test results due to the high volume of daily infections.
Anyway, another couple of days after Charlie tested positive, I started having covid symptoms too.
I was also positive from LFT.
We were both isolated.
All ended on Christmas Day.
We enjoyed a good Christmas together.
Now I’m almost fully recovered from my cough, Charlie is recovering from it as well, but it has left him with a cough as well as feeling tired, but he is on a fast road to recovery.
He’s doing ok, eating very well everyday.
Please don’t worry - he’s fine and wishes you all happy new year! Xx

04/01: STATEMENT: January Gigs Cancelled / Postponed

Sorry all, but the U.K. Subs are unable to play the shows as advertised for Stafford, London, Derby, Dover and Southend, starting on the 12th ‘till the 16th January. There are 3 major reasons why it’s no longer possible for us to do so: firstly, although we were able to complete our winter UK tour successfully, Charlie succumbed to the dreaded Covid curse a couple of days after returning home. He’s doing fine, almost back to normal, but needs a little more time to fully recover. Secondly, living in France as I do, all travel from here to the UK is now restricted to only those with essential reasons for doing so – unfortunately this does not include playing Punk rock at the 100 Club! – plus a good chance of a partial lockdown being imminent and more restrictions on the way. And thirdly, with the onslaught of the omicron variant, crowded venues are not a healthy idea at present anyway. Having already lost friends like Mensi and Tony Feedback to this terrible virus, we wouldn’t want to be responsible for any serious illness or worse as a result of people coming to see us play. The London 100 Club and Stafford venues have cancelled and are offering full refunds for any tickets purchased. The Southend show is rescheduled for 10th April, whilst the Derby and Dover shows have been rescheduled for 16th and 18th September, all tickets bought being valid for these rescheduled gigs. Hopefully, in a couple of months, the infection rate will drop and restrictions will lift. We look forward to playing for you then.

Charlie Harper, 17 December 1998 - quoted from an interview in Scanner Fanzine Issue 3

"Among the many bands on the bill are some of the veterans of the punk/new wave explosion of the late 1970s including... ...the seemingly indestructible UK Subs. Still fronted by Charlie Harper, who first formed the band as an Elizabethan madrigal quartet sometime in the 1600s, UK Subs were one of the original punk bands from 1976 and are notable not least for the fact of having been through at least 35 drummers in their 35-year history."
