   T&M U.K. SUBS NEWSFEED 2020...

28/11: NEW ON NEW ALVIN SINGLE ARTWORK

Time & Matter Records are delighted to share the following news about Alvin Gibbs' next solo single with us, so in the words of Alvin, as posted via his Facebook page...

"Friends and acquaintances, Rockers of all persuasions, dudes and dudettes, I’m very happy to share with you the news that Patrick Collier has now mixed the 3 songs that will constitute the forthcoming ‘State of Grace’ 45 RPM single – this being the spanking new record offering from Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants – which has now been passed to T & M Records for mastering and thereafter to be transmuted into luscious 7-inch vinyl.

These recordings were achieved via a new methodology for us, namely remote home technology and, although I know its bad form to mark your own homework, I really do think the result of this fresh approach is 3 stunning new tracks for your ear pleasure that will be heading your way shortly. I’m also delighted to preview for you the single’s specially commissioned exquisite front and back sleeve artwork from former Adverts’ bassist turned successful artist, Gaye Black – aka Gaye Advert.

I will of course furnish a release date as soon as the single is manufactured and ready to roll. Meanwhile, with Christmas fast approaching, methinks a copy of the Disobedient Servants last record submission – the History EP (again with wonderful sleeve artwork from Gaye) – and/or a copy of Volume I of my memoir series of books entitled ‘Diminished Responsibility: My Life as a UK Subs and Other Strange Stories’ would make atypical but much appreciated Crimbo presents for the discerning UK Subs’ or Punk rock fan, or just general lovers of juicy action-packed Rock music biographies. Both of these suggested gifts are available for ordering via this link:

OK Facebook chums, have a great Sunday and please keep supporting new music from wherever it comes from during this unprecedented time of live performance atrophy. A X"

22/11: STEVE STRAUGHAN DONATING SUBS

COLLECTABLES TO AID ANIMALS

U.K. Subs guitarist Steve Straughan is donating many Subs related items to a local cause (https://www.facebook.com/FoxyGoodies/) to help protect foxes via their Facebook fundraising page who sell and auction a range of gifts and merchandise to help raise funds for the group. 100% of monies raised pays to get them out in the field with essential equipment in order to help them prevent illegal hunting in Northumberland.

The U.K. Subs T&M website has also donated 20 Subs and punk related t-shirts to go with Steve’s various Subs tour posters, posters for Steve’s other band Hi Fi Spitfires, Rare Punk in Sunderland posters, Hi Fi Spitfires albums on CD and vinyl, as well as Steve’s solo project The Last Gang CD. Steve has also given some merch for his old band Holy Racket and their rare 7” single. There are also packs of punk rock cards which Steve bought on tour years ago in Germany, featuring loads of bands including Leatherface from Sunderland. Also, two used tickets for a Hong Kong U.K. Subs gig, a handful of Subs setlists, and two signed Subs posters plus U.K. Subs guitar strings.

Like the page to keep up to date with all the new items being added.

Steve told the Subs Time & Matter website about why this is a cause close to his heart:

“It's just my way of saying thank you, and my way to contribute to the absolute heroes on the frontline protecting our countryside and animals. It's quite convenient of me to say I love animals while in the comfort of my own home while others are out there in horrible weather at the crack of dawn driving to some place in the country to be confronted by the most evil, violent, out of date animal abusing people there are. When I'm home from tour I like to help animal charities in my area if I can.
I can only do a little bit so I tend to choose a local one when I'm free. I'm blessed to be in bands that puts me in a great position to be able to get people's attention. I'm not exactly the richest guy out there but I do have things that other people may want that helps animal charities. When I'm on tour I normally pick up a few posters etc. I always keep one for myself and give the others to Hunt Sabs/monitor groups or animal shelter groups. This time it's for the Northumberland Hunt Watch group we are aiming to help. In the past we have helped the Cat's protection league, NE Hunt monitors and Pawz for thought animal shelter. I'm still amazed at how many people out there think that because fox hunting is banned and illegal it therefore doesn't happen. Well! To those who think it doesn't, you’re wrong. All the evidence is there to see. When you have money and people in high places, they can normally get away with anything despite it being against the law and utterly abhorrent.

I've got friends up and down the country who monitor the repulsive activities of these red coat, horse riding thugs and terrier men and they often come face to face with violence. Can you imagine being kicked and punched and spat at for helping animals. It's just so out of date and barbaric. On many occasions the people saving the animals have their vehicles vandalized - windows are smashed or tyres slashed. If anyone would like to help, they could either donate some musical related item or buy some item from the fundraiser page. By doing so you would be helping to raise money towards equipment like walkie talkies, cameras etc that they desperately need to log evidence. At the moment they have the page up and running but have only begun showing the items slowly to get people's attention. Everything will be on there soon including many Subs tour posters and lots of other punk stuff. I've got to mention one friend who has kindly donated a big proportion of his record collection including a Sex Pistols record that is number 1 of 30 pressed. Also, another friend is paying a local artist to paint a picture of Charlie Harper. We are then getting Charlie to sign it and then auction it.

Thanks

Steve"

14/11: CHARLIE ON NEW RAMONAS RELEASE

A couple of weeks ago, Charlie was back in the studio, to add some harmonica to a new recording by The Ramonas.

Subs fans will recall that Charlie has previously recorded a couple of harmonica solos for The Ramonas which appeared on their first two LPs, their debut 'First World Problems' and the follow up 'Acoustic Problems', and this time around it is for a special "...remote lockdown video" that the band have all recorded separately at home.

The song is called From Belgium With Love and it is a reworking of a track that appeared on their acoustic album.

The band will be releasing the video as well as a bandcamp download of the track on 4th December.

Recorded at Ali Gavan’s Brighton Road Recording Studios where Charlie's forthcoming new single on Time & Matter was cut, Ramonas bassist Vicky Smith - who played bass on one of Charlie's new tracks as well as on his second solo album 'Little Black Crow', told T&M that...

"I think we'd all say we were really excited to have Charlie guest on the track, we love his enthusiasm for new music and the harmonica was perfect for this track..."

13/11: NEW CHARLIE HARPER 7" UPDATE

As recently reported, Time & Matter Records will be releasing a brand-new Charlie Harper 7” single in the new year. Originally the duo of tracks were recorded for release with Charlie’s autobiography ‘An Anarchy Of Demons’, to be published by Rare Bird Books in LA, USA, however, due to publishing delays, Charlie offered the tracks to Time & Matter who obviously jumped at the chance of releasing them.

Billed as CHARLIE HARPER & THE SUB MACHINE, this gloriously fab new 7” single (T&M 041) will be a double A-sided offering on coloured vinyl, the two tracks being titled ‘Panic’ and ‘Post War Punks’.

Recorded, produced, engineered and mixed earlier this year at joint-owner’s Ali Gavan’s Brighton Road Recording Studios in Newtimber, West Sussex, the ‘Sub Machine’ musicians comprise brothers Marlon and Bram Payne alongside Marley Perez, who is Charlie Harper's grandson. That trio of youngsters were part of the excellent early-teen punk band from Brighton called A-M-I who released an album with Time & Matter back in 2014. Bram however, couldn’t make the recording of ‘Panic’, so Victoria Smith from the brilliant Ramonas played bass on that track.

‘Panic’ is a blistering battle cry for the world’s population to fully wake up to the ever-frightening global climate crisis and was inspired by the admirable and inspirational 17-year-old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The equally impressive song ‘Post War Punks’ provides intriguing light relief on the other side, which Charlie describes as “a real surreal song”, this time the inspiration came via Marlon and Bram, who told Charlie about their mum having had a recent dream about “post-punk sandwiches”!

In typical Harper style, Charlie thought this was a great idea to base a song on, and the resulting recording will have you all singing along with the surreal chorus when you hear it.

Time & Matter are currently working on the sleeve artwork, from a recent photographic session by David Apps, and the single will boast a double sided illustrated inner sleeve with the song lyrics. The release will also come with a download code for the digitally minded.

These new solo recordings are something that Charlie is obviously very proud of, as he also revealed to T&M that he “would love to record an album” as Charlie Harper & the Sub Machine at some point post-pandemic.

Time & Matter will keep you up-to-date with the single’s production progress leading up to it being made available to pre-order on both our webstore platforms.

11/11: CHARLIE HARPER AUTOBIOGRAPHY

T&M EXCLUSIVE NEWS REVEAL!

Charlie Harper has alluded to the fact that he is in the process of writing his autobiography on various podcasts and in a number of interviews this last year, and Time & Matter can now exclusively confirm its title, publisher and writing progress.

Charlie is nearing the final stages of the writing process, having used the time he has been off the road due to the Coronavirus pandemic to research and write almost every day.

The title of Charlie’s memoirs will be AN ANARCHY OF DEMONS, which not only is a great title for an autobiography, but is also a lyrical phrase from that excellent U.K. Subs track ‘Anti-Warfare’, initially released on a various artists compilation LP back in 1984. When asked by T&M about his first book starting with the letter A, the legendary Subs frontman laughed out loud!

Charlie told T&M that he has really enjoyed the experience of penning his memoirs, although the publishers, who are Rare Bird Books, based in Los Angeles, California, USA had originally planned to publish Charlie’s book this year. However, due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the publishing date has now been re-scheduled for 2021.

Rare Bird, who deal with an impressive wide range of genres, have previously issued a number of music-based books, with some of these coming with a bonus vinyl record. Charlie had in fact recorded two tracks for a 7” to go with his autobiography, but due to the ongoing publishing delays, has decided to release those tracks with Time & Matter Records, and is planning on recording two newer tracks for the book as soon as the current situation allows.

Subs fans might like to sign up for the Rare Bird newsletter for possible announcements regarding Charlie’s book, although there is no mention of it online at present:

Stay tuned for more progress reports and announcements on the Time & Matter website folks...

11/11: NEW B A R D A R SCARF FROM MAINSTAGE

Iain Kilgallon, who runs the fabulous Mainstage Merchandise, one of the official Subs merchandisers, has posted news on the U.K. Subs Fan Club on Facebook about their great new 'Born A Rocker, Die A Rocker' scarf...

"Charlie just sent this pic of himself with the new scarf he allowed me to design and get made to try get the band a little extra income during these worrying times that they can't get out and do what they do best, play live shows.

To be allowed to work with some like Charlie and the band, people who I grew up idolising as a starry-eyed young school kid is beyond my wildest dreams, it really is, and I will never be able to thank him enough.

These would make great, and very different, stocking fillers.

06/11: CHARLIE HARPER AND THE MISTAKES

Last week, Charlie made the journey west along the south coast to Poole in Dorset to meet up in the studio with one of the UKs best punk outfits THE MISTAKES.

Charlie has been a massive fan of the band for a few years so he was super-keen to guest on a couple of their new tracks, delivering his unique and unforgettable vocal style on the rampant, raging ‘Don’t Push Me’ - a track co-written by Charlie and the band - as well as playing harmonica on another cut titled ‘Form Square’.

The Mistakes were absolutely delighted with the results telling the U.K. Subs’ Time & Matter website that they “felt like we are very much on the ascent and it was if the godfather of punk was passing the torch to us…”

The brand-new Mistake LP – their third - will be titled ‘A Head Full Of Damage’ and is due late January 2021 on NBQ Records. It will be released as a limited edition of 300 with 150 being pressed on blue and black splatter and 150 on transparent vinyl.

This first pressing won't be repressed on these colours so make sure you Subs collectors out there grab a copy of some brand-new sparkling punk featuring Mr Harper on the following

ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA:
9/10 Vive Le Rock Magazine Review

“…an album to delight any lover of lustfully played, riotous riffage fuelled and in-yer-face attitude street punk. Artfully arranged songs, skilfully soaking up the various eras of punk, The Mistakes exude every impressive aspect associated with the genre.”

UPSTARTS AND HERETICS:
9/10 Vive Le Rock Magazine Review

“…Rousing songs oozing sweat and class, their thrilling energising performances are now wax preserved, street-smart uplifting observational lyrics embellish razor-sharp guitar, balancing melody and aggression aside a rhythm section rumbling and rampaging; enticing you to crazy-dance anywhere these beats blast. Essential listening.”

31/10: T&M TO RELEASE NEW ALVIN 7"

Time & Matter Records are thrilled to make a joint announcement with Alvin that his band Alvin Gibbs & the Disobedient Servants are in the (new) process of recording a brand new three-track 7" single for us, the A-side being a re-interpretation of the Urban Dogs' song 'State of Grace', which was originally released on their 'Wipeout Beach' album in 1998

This is how Alvin announced this exciting news - via his own Facebook page:

"Well, the plan was to do some recording with the U.K. Subs and then follow on with the making of a new Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants’ album in London starting this week, but due to France now being in a national lockdown situation and the UK looking to follow suit shortly, that’s all been set aside for now… goddammit! So, in order not to fall prey to total inactivity, Jamie Oliver of the Subs, Leigh Heggarty of the Ruts and I have been working on a new Disobedient Servants three-track single via the magic of home recording technology. The titles for these latest songs are ‘State of Grace’ (the A-side offering), ‘Too Bad She’s In Love’ and ‘Brother, Sister’. We may well involve other players to contribute their musical ideas for the single at some point too. The artwork will again be provided by the brilliant Gaye Black – aka Gaye Advert – and we are hoping to release it on T&M Records in a mere couple of months. I’ve also been working away at volume 2 of my memoir book series ‘Diminished Responsibility: My Life as a UK Sub and Other Strange Stories’, this second tome being set for publication in the first quarter of next year. Meanwhile, the Disobedient Servants last recorded offering, the critically acclaimed ‘History’ 4 song EP on 2 coloured vinyl 45 rpm disks housed in an innovative gatefold sleeve adorned by stunning Gaye Black artwork, is still available to buy along with the equally press praised volume 1 of the ‘Diminished’ book duo. Both can be ordered via this link and methinks would make cool Christmas gifts for those who are looking to give something more imaginative than new socks and undies this Crimbo: http://timematterrecordings.bigcartel.com
Have a good weekend all. A X "

30/10: T&M TO RELEASE NEW CHARLIE 7"

Time & Matter Records are delighted to announce that we have another new release in the pipeline - Charlie Harper and the Sub Machine - a gloriously fab new 7” single... thought we’d share this bit of joyous news with you in these challenging times...
Stay tuned for more T&M new release progress and announcements folks...

Demon Records will be releasing 'Endangered Species' on 27 November 2020 as their next U.K. Subs re-issue in the popular double 10" album series that has seen the albums A to D already given this unique makeover.

As with the previous four releases in this 10" double album series, this new release will have a fantastic gatefold sleeve, two full colour inner sleeves as well as exclusive, newly penned liner notes by the recording line up - Charlie Harper, Nicky Garratt, Alvin Gibbs and Steve Roberts.

Below is the Demon website blurb on the release:
"About this release

Demon’s double 10″ vinyl reissue series of the U.K. Subs early albums continues with the bands fifth LP ‘Endangered Species’.

Originally released in 1982, and available for the first time as a double 10″; including 7 non LP bonus tracks. Includes the single ‘Countdown’, and ‘Down On The Farm’ as covered by Guns N Roses.

In the opinion of vocalist Charlie Harper, this is the best record the band ever recorded. Each member has provided personal notes on their memories of the album in the gatefold sleeve. The inner bags contain lyrics to all the songs and previously unpublished photos by Andy Phillips."

Following the recent excellent CATtales Charlie interview, Cat has just published/broadcast another short related piece about the interview, as well as the cat painting Charlie did for her excellent show...

...you can now enter a PRIZE DRAW to win a fine art print of Charlie's cat painting...

80: The one about winning Charlie's cat painting

"The UK Subs' Charlie Harper is a creative guy and just can't stop the flow. When he's not touring the world with one of the most iconic punk rock bands in history he's raising money for charity by...well...painting...errr...cats!
Now, many people may not think of cats as very punk but, let's be honest, anyone who has owned or come into contact with a cat will know that nothing has more 'attitude' than those little feline creatures. And here, at CATtales, we love them...how could we not?
So, when Charlie put his artistic talents into producing a cat painting especially for us, we were holding onto our tails with anticipation! And the result was a stunning, fun, piece of art that truly captures the spirit of CATtales and is as unique as the show itself.
Now, you can WIN your very own unframed A4, fine art print of Charlie’s cat! The print will be produced using a professional Giclée process within a rigorously colour-managed environment on Hahnemühle Photo Matte paper, which has an archival figure of over 200 years – so you can be sure it will always look as fabulous as the day it was painted.
For details about the ts&cs and how to enter the draw, head over to cattales.co.uk/win, follow the links and Charlie’s cat print could be yours! Good luck!"

13/09: CHARLIE HARPER INTERVIEW ON CAT TALES

Following on from interviews with U.K. Subs' Alvin Gibbs and Steve Straughan, the excellent CATtales podcast has just published/broadcast another excellent interview, this time with Charlie...

Episode 79: The one with the UK Subs' Charlie Harper

"Charlie Harper is an absolute one-off. Back in the seventies this former hairdresser took the UK Subs from London’s punk clubs to Top of the Pops and whilst other punk veterans have become idols, Charlie has become an icon.
Now over seventy, he’s still performing with the band, still throwing himself around the stage and still entertaining audiences who refuse to grow old. But when he’s not on the road touring, he’s writing his autobiography and has a penchant for painting cats..."

And here is the result...a stunning, fun, piece of art that truly captures the spirit of CATtales and is as unique as the show itself.
We will be bringing you some very exciting news about Charlie's fabulous cat painting very soon, so listen out for the tale with Charlie Harper for more details. Grab your tails, it will be aired next month..."

26/08: ANOTHER FAB REVIEW FOR ALVIN'S BOOK

JUST PUBLISHED! There is a fantastic review of Alvin Gibbs' T&M book by Jennifer Upton on her brilliant Womanycom website...

"
The author knows his audience. Well. After having spent years chatting with them pre and post-gig, he knows what they want. He gives plenty of detail on the writing and recording process for the Subs’ fourth and fifth records, Diminished Responsibility and Endangered Species and copious anecdotes on guitarist Nicky Garratt, drummer Steve Roberts and their perpetually young-at-heart leader Charlie Harper. The best of which had my significant other writhing in hysterics, clutching his ribs.
Citing literary influences as diverse as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hunter S. Thompson, Raymond Chandler and Charles Bukowski, Gibbs’ descriptive prose and humorous anecdotes would entertain even readers unfamiliar with the Subs music.

16/08: GREAT NEW INTERVIEW WITH CHARLIE HARPER

RETROPOPIC 505:
CHARLIE HARPER OF THE UK SUBS TALKS: REMEMBERING THE ROXY IN '77

Neil Saint, who runs and hosts the fabulous and always fascinating show Retropopic, has recently spoken to Charlie and the result is a great interview just published...

"Alongside great tracks from The Kinks, Eggs Over Easy, The Damned, The Jam, The Velvet Underground and of course The UK Subs, The Saint of RETROPOPIC RADIO talks with UK Subs frontman Charlie Harper about his memories of the London live music scene from the 60s up until the time of 1977

What are Charlie's memories of seeing The Kinks at The Marquee when they broke big? How does he remember Charaguaramas before it transformed into The Roxy? Enjoying The Ramones & The Damned, why didn't he embrace playing punk straightway? Where did the anger of British punk come from? What are his memories of the London punk venues of 1977? Where did the group name UK Subs come from? What are his thoughts on the violence that surrounded punk? How much does he live as a punk today? What are his hopes on a continuation of touring for 'The Subs'?

Remember RETROPOPIC RADIO is the home of great British punk!"

27/07: REBELLION ONLINE FESTIVAL 2020

REBELLION ONLINE FESTIVAL

U.K. SUBS are on
at 5.30pm on Friday August 7th

MORE INFO FROM
THE REBELLION FB PAGE...

REBELLION ONLINE FESTIVAL 2020
Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th August 2020

We’re not doing a ‘LIVE STREAM’ as we think that a 12 hour live session is a step too far and fraught with problems! This is a collection of unique content that we’ve curated for you. So on the weekend you can pour a drink and dip in and out of our Facebook page where every half an hour we’ll be POSTING a different video.

There are 105 videos giving you over 25 hours of footage to watch over the weekend. Some videos are over half an hour long, some are 5 minutes (giving you a chance to get a beer and nibbles!). It's not a constant stream.

And just like Rebellion there’s something for everyone. We don’t expect everyone to like everything and that’s what makes Rebellion so unique. We have a broad range and if you don’t fancy watching one of the clips you can wait until another comes along or go back and watch an earlier one you may have missed.

Having Facebook Posts throughout the day gives you the chance to pick and choose what you want to see of the ‘ONLINE FESTIVAL’ – much like the weekend itself. No need to scroll through a live stream to find the artist you want that might appear 6 hours in! It’s also great for all our friends in different time zones.

This does mean that you'll need to come and visit the page everytime you want to see a new post as Facebook doesn't always appear in everyone's feed.

Anyway, scroll back down the Rebellion Facebook page to see the LINE UP and TIMES for each day and have a watch of the teaser videos.

As it is a FACEBOOK PAGE you don't need a Facebook account to view it. So if you know anyone NOT on FB just give them this address and they'll be able to type it into a browser and see the posts:

The excellent CATtales podcast has just published an excellent interview with Alvin Gibbs...

Episode 73: The one with UK Subs' Alvin Gibbs

"In this show, I call France to chat with one of punk’s true originals. He’s the bassist who toured with Iggy Pop, played in Cheap & Nasty, has been a member of UK Subs on and off for over forty years and has recently released his first solo album, Your Disobedient Servant, with a who’s who of punk royalty guesting on it.

Alvin Gibbs chats with me about the highs and lows of being in the UK Subs, what he got up to in between, all about his new autobiography, Diminished Responsibility, and gives me the scoop on who would like to be one of his Disobedient Servants on his second album..."

25/06: STEVE ROBERTS 'NEWS' STORY IN YORK PRESS

The York Press has today published a news featured in relation to the second book recently published by ex-Subs drummer Steve Roberts - now known as Stevie Ze Suicide - under the heading: Terminator fan Stevie Ze Suicide stunned by gift from Arnie

"YORK punk rocker Stevie Ze Suicide was stunned after receiving a special box set of Terminator DVDs - signed by Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.

Stevie, a big fan of the Terminator films, said the Hollywood film star and former Governor of California sent the surprise gift after a friend gave Arnie a copy of his new book, Fragile Butterfly..."

20/06: FREE UNRELEASED URBAN DOGS TRACK

Urban Dogs: Ganja

WWW.ROTATORVINYL.COM have today made available a free, previously unreleased Urban Dogs track called Ganja, an out-take from the Wipeout Beach LP recording sessions. The digital track can be streamed or downloaded for free at:

https://rotatorvinyl.bandcamp.com/releases

Knox exclusively gave T&M some background on this long lost track...

"I came across the track "Ganja" when I was looking through tons of old cassettes, CDRs, etc.
We couldn't include it on the Wipeout Beach album as we didn't think Van the Man would like it!! I just thought it would be a fun thing to have out at this time and it wouldn't matter if it got taken down. I sent it to Charlie with the idea to get it out, and he suggested that Peter Jones of Paranoid Visions would be able to do it, and that's what happened. I think we already had the track "Baby Marley" recorded for the Wipeout Beach album, and I guess we started messing around in the studio playing "Gloria", and it then got called "Ganja"! "

Bandcamp site blurb:
"Urban Dogs is a long standing collaboration between punk rock royalty Knox (the Vibrators) and Charlie Harper (UK Subs). Together they have released (to date) five albums and five singles/ep's since 1982. This particular track is an outtake from the 1998 Wipeout Beach album sessions recorded at Dave Goodman's studio.

In 2020, with the world and the gig/music scene trapped in the Covid 19 Pandemic, it was felt... quite rightly... that a bit of free entertainment should be thrown out for your pleasure... download and stream, download, distribute and spread the love!"

"In the second episode of our Lockdown Lowdown Podcast series, we welcome Ruts DC guitarist Leigh Heggarty into the virtual Retrosonic Podcast studio. Leigh talks us through some of his most memorable musical moments from hearing The Beatles for the first time to gigs and records that made an impact on him and his guitar playing, right through to the present day touring and recording with Ruts DC. Along the way we learn about his encounters with Henry Rollins, Wayne Kramer, The Stranglers, Alvin Gibbs, Wilko Johnson and of course Paul Fox, Segs and David Ruffy of The Ruts/Ruts DC. There's also a look back on the now legendary but hugely emotional benefit show for Paul Fox, his last with The Ruts, which featured Henry Rollins on lead vocals and many special guests including The Damned, Misty In Roots, U.K. Subs, Tom Robinson and more. This hugely enjoyable trip down memory lane is soundtracked by some of Leigh's favourite tunes from The Beatles, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, The Who, Rory Gallagher, Bruce Springsteen, Dr. Feelgood, The Stranglers and The Flamin' Groovies and of course The Ruts. There's also a pick of Leigh's own work with The Price, Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants and of course, Ruts DC..."

The always-brilliant NUZZ PROWLING WOLF blog website is the first out of the blocks with a review of the forthcoming ALVIN GIBBS & THE DISOBEDIENT SERVANTS' superb T&M 'History' EP.

“…Alvin, Leigh and Jamie kicking up a mighty row between the three of 'em. 'Bad About You' chugs and chops along, while 'History' is a haunting anthem that builds and builds before it blows! epic, enthralling and explosive. 'If Only' is short and sweet like the Ramones on Ritalin. 'Pavlovian' with its screaming and stabbing guitars, pounding drums and thumping bass knocks you to the floor and leaves you wanting more...
These four tunes are Hard, Heavy and Hook laden Rock'n'Roll of the Highest order!”

Alvin’s fellow punk luminary HENRY ROLLINS brilliantly observes in his ‘Foreword’ in the book:

“Alvin puts his experiences across with energy and excellent detail… cheerful, hilarious and armed with insight… you are immediately pulled in by this book’s contents… a mark of not only a great story teller but of one who has truly lived in full and continues to do so…”

31/03: Subs debut album features in Altpress 1979 LP article

Altpress writer Tim Stegall has published an article which is currently being discussed further on the U.K. Subs Fan Club Facebook page as it includes the U.K. Subs' debut album in the best 15 punk albums released in 1979...

"Musical subtlety hardly concerned second-wave Britpunk’s greatest band, UK Subs. 30-something ex-hairdresser singer Charlie Harper and his three bondaged-trousered friends sustained a fundamentalist pogo roar. Their debut LP, Another Kind Of Blues, initiated the Subs’ lengthy career and string of alphabetically named LPs, featuring aggressive shoutalongs such as “C.I.D.” and “Stranglehold.” Harper and his ever-changing lineups’ became punk’s AC/DC—relentlessly rigid musically and somehow finding something fresh and exciting in the row they’d keep plowing…"

"...second-wave Britpunk's greatest band..."?

"...became punk's AC/DC..."?

Some interesting views as a synopsis of the band's career and musical output... obviously the majority of members of the Facebook Fan Club group may not agree with the above but at least the band's much-loved debut album is getting some recognition here...

The brand new Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants double 7" with gatefold sleeve - the 'History EP' - has been delivered to the T&M HQ and even though we say so ourselves, it looks and feels magnificent...

This beauty will be available to pre-order when the T&M webstore reopens.

That will be dependent on current restrictions changing but we will update you when our webstore is taking pre-orders for the double single.

In the meantime stay indoors and give some previous T&M vinyl releases a good loud blast on your turntable folks...

Stay safe all.

CLICK THE IMAGES TO ENLARGE

Alvin Gibbs shared the above news on his Facebook page with the following post on 28/03/2020:

"Some good news at last…This beauty has now arrived at Time & Matter Records HQ from the manufacturers. The latest Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants’ offering consists of four brand new songs on two separate vinyl 45s housed in a double gatefold sleeve ornamented by superb artwork from Gaye Black (aka Gaye Advert). Entitled the ‘History EP’, both 45s feature yours truly on bass guitar throughout, plus lead vocals on three tracks, while Ruts DC axeman Leigh Heggarty provides guitar parts for every song and a lead vocal performance on a stunning self-composed number. UK Subs’ percussionist Jamie Oliver confers the drums and is the co-writer of the most balls-out rocker of this quartet entitled ‘If Only’. Recorded at the famed Perry Vale studios in South London with ex-Vibrators’ bassist Pat Collier engineering and co-producing, these are the first DS’ recordings to be released since the ‘Your Disobedient Servant’ album last year.
Due to the present pandemic the Time & Matter online shop will be closed for a week or two yet, after which time you will be able to purchase the EP directly from this online location. I will provide a direct link to the shop in a post as soon as it’s open for business again. Meanwhile, please be safe, be healthy, stay inside as much as you can and keep listening to music in the comfort of your own home whilst looking forward to the day when we can again venture out safely to experience the raw primal power of Punk rock music in a live setting. 31/07: SAM JONES 'RETROSPECTIVE' DOWNLOAD OFFER

U.K. Subs followers will recall that Time & Matter Records released a limited edition 7” single back in 2014 entitled ‘Featuring Charlie Harper’, of which one side was Sam Jones’ ‘band’ The Berlin Lights’ ‘Hit The Floor’ track which included some great harmonica from the Subs’ main man.

Having only previously appeared on the aforementioned vinyl release, ‘Hit The Floor’ was then released on CD for the first time on Sam's 'Retrospective' compilation.

Sam has now issued a new inexpensive download + version of this excellent compilation, announcing on Facebook that:

"In these uncertain times I've decided to release a new 'download +' version of 'Retrospective' for just £3!

23/03: T&M webshop temporarily closed

Following this evening's Government announcement we have made the difficult decision to close the T&M Big Cartel webshop for the next 3 weeks.
We are acutely aware that the post office is a lifeline for the elderly and vulnerable in our society and feel it would be irresponsible to risk introducing coronavirus into that environment. As a small mail order company we feel we have no choice and it is the sensible thing to do.
We will review this situation in 3 weeks time.
Stay safe.

You can still stream and download tracks through our Bandcamp page.
This will keep revenue going to the bands whilst they're not making anything from gigging.

17/03: Subs and solo shows postponed due to coronavirus
On behalf of the U.K. Subs, bassist Alvin Gibbs has released the following statement concerning the forthcoming U.K. Subs' spring UK tour dates from April til May, along with his Alvin Gibbs & The Disobedient Servants' shows and Charlie's solo gigs booked at the end of May...

"This is an unusually long post but I would appreciate you all reading it in its entirety as it’s essential that on behalf of the U.K. Subs I set out our present position in full…
It’s with a heavy heart that I have to report from U.K. Subs’ HQ that our forthcoming UK Spring tour running from April 9th to May 10th is to be rescheduled for next year, on or around April 1st to May 2nd 2021. There are two equally important reasons for this decision. Our dear friend and comrade in Punk, Charlie Harper, is about to reach the age of 76 and with his underlying health issues would be a prime candidate for the worse possible outcome if he was to be infected with the Corona virus during this touring cycle. He has also acquired a respiratory problem whilst recently touring Europe (not Corona related) that has persisted and is presently on his second course of antibiotics. It would be sheer madness to risk his health and life in such circumstances as all the indicators are the pandemic will become far more widespread with significantly greater numbers of people being infected over the next few months and, very possibly, for far longer. This is something Jamie, Steve, Charlie’s wife Yuko and I have concluded after discussions together, as well as with Charlie himself.
The second equally valid reason is that we do not want to be responsible for the spread and thereafter the possible consequences to people’s health and wellbeing of this new and virulent virus strain by gathering people together in our name. As Charlie said to me just a couple of days ago ‘It’s not only about me Alvin, it’s about everybody else and those who come to see us putting themselves in danger of getting the virus if we go ahead with this’. We are all in agreement with Charlie’s point of view and believe it’s now time to be conscientious and concerned about others rather than some macho posturing and the deluded idea that just because you play in a band you are somehow exempt from the laws of biology and have no duty of care or consideration to your audience. This is a virus that doesn’t give a damn about your social or scene status and although most of those infected will develop no more than flu-like symptoms, if they in turn unintentionally infect their elderly parents, grandparents, the old lady or elderly fella next door, younger people with respiratory illnesses, or diabetes, or heart problems, or young children, the outcome could very well be deadly serious for these categories of vulnerable people – and it can take up to a week for the flu-like symptoms to develop post virus acquisition when, during this seemingly healthy period, you are still able to pass on the virus to others – this what I mean by ‘unintentionally infect’.
You all know the touring culture of the U.K. Subs. We are perhaps the hardest working Punk rock outfit there is, playing more shows and embarking on more tours per year than just about any other band in the genre. It’s not in our DNA to postpone tours and we are very sad and apologetic in having to do so. We are all too aware that people have already made plans, booked hotels and travel tickets and were looking forward to seeing the band play live again in the forthcoming months. The band was equally eager to perform for you all and we unreservedly apologise for the disappointment and the unravelling of plans and travel arrangements this postponement will produce. We too are greatly affected. Being a professional outfit that relies on touring for its income we will be losing a considerable amount of money in concert fees and merchandise sales, plus we’d already booked non-refundable hotels and, living in France, I have personally paid out for non-refundable return train tickets to Paris and return tickets on Eurostar from Paris to London specifically for this tour. There is no statutory sick pay for us and no means of financial support during this indeterminate length of time until it’s again rational to get back to gigging and earning. But we believe there are more important things at stake at present than money, and that people’s health and wellbeing should take precedent over economic considerations.
Over the next couple of weeks the UK may well follow the examples of Italy, Spain and other European countries in closing bars, restaurants, clubs, theatres, and other places where people gather as well as compelling people to remain in their homes, allowing only brief trips to chemists or food vendors. My adopted country of France has already implemented all these measures, instigated a blanket ban on internal travel apart from essential workers (doctors, nurses, etc) and has closed the borders so although it is still possible to leave the nation, unless you’re a French national you cannot return. I now even have to download, print and fill in a government form before leaving my house on each occasion to explain why I need to venture outside, or face a fine if challenged by the gendarmes. Obviously, getting to the UK to play with the Subs is therefore no longer an option for me. Consequently, I have no choice but to also postpone and later reschedule the five shows I was due to play in the UK in May with the Disobedient Servants. Charlie is likewise rescheduling his May solo gigs for later dates. We will be giving regular updates on how those who have already purchased tickets will be able to reuse them for the rescheduled tour and these solo gigs.
Strange days indeed, but we need to accept and accordingly react to the reality of the present situation rather than irrationally expect reality to change for our own convenience and pleasure. If we look after each other and show consideration and common sense towards our fellow citizens as an act of solidarity, things will return to normality sooner rather than later; at which point the U.K. Subs will return to entertain you in the manner you’re accustomed to, playing loud and proud Punk rock music around the world and ever ready to chat and share a beer with you at the bar. For now though, stay safe, stay healthy and we will see you all again when this loathsome pandemic has run its course.
Alvin Gibbs, on behalf of Charlie and Yuko Harper, Stephen Straughan and Jamie Oliver – collectively known as the U.K. Subs."

29/02: Brand New Subs Album 'Reverse Technology'

After Charlie recently spilt the beans on his forthcoming autobiography on the Del Strangefish Radio Show (see news story below 17/01), along with the welcome/shock news that the Subs are to make a brand new studio album, further confirmation has now been published with a fantastic article recently published via an online Amsterdam newspaper at:

Is there life after Z? ‘Absolutely! The next album is most likely to be called Reverse Technology..."

10/02: Fabulous two-part interview with Nicky Garratt

The PEEK-A-BOO magazine online has published a fascinating, in-depth interview with ex-Subs guitarist Nicky Garratt, which covers much of his time with the Subs, from the early days until Nicky's eventual departure to form Hedersleben.

"In '77 I was still looking for somewhere to live. I was squatting in South London and a friend of mine knew somebody who was looking for a guitar-player. It was actually Charlie Harper. UK Subs had already made a demo then the lineup felt apart. So it was basically the bass-player – Steve Slack Charlie and a temporary drummer. They’d not made any records or anything but in 77 I joined them. A friend of mine give me a piece of paper with a phone number and said: “You should call this guy! He’s looking for a guitar-player!” and he said that the band was called – US Jets because he couldn’t remember and it was actually UK Subs. I called him: “Oh, yeah! Come around!” Charlie was always late. He’s not really late so much anymore because he kind of runs things now but back then he was always late. So I got to his apartment and his flat mate let me in and said: “He should be back soon!” so I was waiting in his living room, sitting there. And when he came in, his flat mate said: “I found a guitar-player for you!” and he basically just said: “Ok, we’re gonna gig on Wednesday!” I didn’t play anything for him. He just said it and…the gig was three days later. He had a few songs…five of them..."

25/01: Mammoth U.K. Subs Photo Book Due 2021

Request for rare and unseen photos from author…
Paul Mileman, the English born professional photographer who now lives and works in New York, is currently nearing completion of his decade long project to publish a book of U.K. Subs rare and unseen photos, posters, gig tickets and other ephemera.
Paul, who is also webmaster of the Subs’ .com website and has also drummed for the band, recently spoke to the U.K. Subs Time & Matter website about his as-yet-untitled book and what he is looking for to provide the finishing touches to what promises to be an essential, and fabulous publication.
Paul revealed to T&M that he anticipates “…the book will be completed late 2020 and be published mid-2021. It will be a limited-edition print run initially of 500 copies and the way it's going at the moment... it's going to be a big book!”
Updating T&M on the current situation, Paul states that “I have loads of photos from pro photographers from 1978, 1979, 1982 shows. I need photos from 1980, 1981 and live shots of the band… I want the book to be somewhat unique - I know there’s a lot of images that have been seen before but I want to try and find images that haven’t been found or used…”
Paul is also looking for “posters, flyers, tickets and T-shirts - basically any memorabilia. There will be a full gigography and discography alongside words by some of the people who were there from the start…” To this end, Paul is keen to talk to the following people, so if you can help put him in contact with the following – please do so… Richard Anderson, Dave Fullbrook, Greg Price, Scott Snowden and Mal Asling.
If you can help with any of the above, or keep tabs on further progress then there is a Facebook group called ‘UK Subs book by Paul Mileman (untitled)’ at https://www.facebook.com/groups/420168808754681/
Paul’s website can be viewed here: https://www.paulmilemanphotography.com/music - you can contact him via this site as well, but please also feel free to e-mail Paul at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Full credits will be included in the published book, so here is a great opportunity to get your old photos alongside your name published via Paul's FAN-tastic project

21/01: Euro Tour Update From Alvin

From Mr Gibbs' FB page... Euro Tour write up...
"Dispatches from the Subs' Euro tour number 1: It has been a great first week for the band out here in Euroland. We kicked off in Paris to a full house, drove the next day to Cologne, Germany for a similarly well attended show, blew the roof off the Fabrik in Hamburg with close to a 1000 people in attendance, played a private festival in a vast holiday resort called, would you believe, Wangerland - sort of a German version of Butlins, but so, so much better - and ended this initial run with a lovely little show in Husum, close to the Danish border, yesterday. Photos below are from various places last week, the last being my delight at finding the wine possibilities at Wangerland were open 24 hours for imbibing from 2 barrels containing good Italian red varieties and 2 holding good Italian white favourites. They were constantly being refilled and were even available with breakfast, although that would have been been a crazy move - toast, coffee, croissant and Pinot Grigio, perhaps not! Five more German dates follow this week, including the brilliant SO36 in Berlin and then Poland and the east starting on Sunday. Yep, Punk rock is most definitely out and about on the euro road again brothers and sisters. A X "

04/01: T&M to release brand new Alvin Gibbs EP

Time & Matter are absolutely delighted to let you know that our next release will be a double 7” gatefold cover single from Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants... here’s Alvin Gibbs’ own announcement:

“Some fresh news for the onset of a New Year brothers and sisters: despite our unrelenting touring schedules, Leigh Heggarty of the Ruts and Jamie Oliver and I of the UK Subs somehow managed to convene at Pat Collier’s Perry Vale Studios for two days to do some recording in our Alvin Gibbs and the Disobedient Servants’ guise while in the UK recently. The result was four spanking new tracks that Time and Matter Records (the issuing record company of my solo album) propose to release as a package of two seven-inch coloured vinyl 45s containing two songs apiece early this year. These will be housed in an innovative gatefold cover, the artwork for which – as seen above – has been bestowed by Gaye Black. Some of you may recall it was Gaye Black (aka Gaye Advert) who provided the superb artwork for my ‘Ghost Train’ solo single of 2018. Entitled the ‘History EP’, this release will presents four new compositions titled as follows: ‘History’ and ‘Pavlovian’, both written/sung by myself; ‘If Only’, a co-write with Jamie Oliver, which again sees me taking on lead vocal duties; and the outstanding ‘Bad About You’, written and sung by Leigh Heggarty. All tracks feature the brilliant drumming and guitar work of Messrs Oliver and Heggarty, along with a bit of random bass guitar nonsense from yours truly. Stand by for a pre-order date and link which I will share with you as soon as I receive them from Time and Matter HQ. Meanwhile, there are still a few copies of the reissue of ‘Your Disobedient Servant’ album on blood-red vinyl (plus on CD) available from the Big Cartel link for those who haven’t yet obtained a copy (http://timematterrecordings.bigcartel.com/)

Looking forward to seeing you on the Euro and UK gig circuit shortly with the Subs, and keep a lookout for some more Disobedient Servants’ shows coming your way in May. Have a great weekend all. A X “

More news on this exciting, fabulous release soon folks!

01/01: Happy new year from T&M

Time & Matter would like to wish all Subs fans, members and ex-members a happy new year, and thank you for your continued support...

Cheers - Mark & Rob

U.K. SUBS IN 1977

It's amazing what can turn up after so many years!
Early U.K. Subs drummer Steve J. Jones - who later returned to play on 1983s 'Flood of Lies' LP - sent in this amazing, previously unpublished photo of the Subs, just after Nicky Garratt had joined in early October 1977.

Steve had this to say about this stunning find!

"Here's a picture of the UK Subs from 1977 - playing the Western Counties pub in Paddington. Not sure if it's been published before. I've had a copy in my scrapbook since '77. I'm sure it was one of the first we played after Nicky Garratt joined. We played that particular pub a number of times - often with Rob Harper also in the band. I'm not sure if Rob is with us on this occasion and simply missing from the shot. I've no idea who took the picture..."

T&M contacted Nicky Garratt about the photo and he confirmed for us that the photo was taken on his "...first weekend with the Subs..."

Charlie Harper, 17 December 1998 - quoted from an interview in Scanner Fanzine Issue 3

"Among the many bands on the bill are some of the veterans of the punk/new wave explosion of the late 1970s including... ...the seemingly indestructible UK Subs. Still fronted by Charlie Harper, who first formed the band as an Elizabethan madrigal quartet sometime in the 1600s, UK Subs were one of the original punk bands from 1976 and are notable not least for the fact of having been through at least 35 drummers in their 35-year history."
