Jez Keefe was well known on the UK gig circuit photographing acts as diverse as The Jim Jones Revue, Wilko Johnson, Slaves and a host of punk legends including Spear of Destiny, The Vibrators, Vice Squad, The Damned and of course the U.K. Subs.

Hailing from Grimsby, Jez was very aware of the important role the RNLI played in the area and was more than happy to have some of his work used in T&M’s 2012 calendar and the 2014 U.K. Subs Tour Programme supporting the charity, he later donated a 42cm x 62cm print of Charlie Harper which raised a further £206 when it was auctioned on Ebay.
His sudden death at the age of 51 in July 2015 left everyone who knew him stunned, prompting tributes from band members and friends alike. T&M would like to thank Jez’s sister, Jo, for giving this project her blessing.
Time & Matter Recordings is a ‘Not For Profit Company’ run by the U.K.Subs Time & Matter website editors, Mark Chadderton & Rob Cook. 100% of the profits from our charity releases are donated to charitable causes personally chosen by Charlie Harper.
All the proceeds from the sale of this calendar will be donated to the RNLI.
The RNLI has saved more than 140,000 lives since its foundation in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. The name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1854.

Charlie Harper

Il Punk Rock? E’ il blues dei ragazzini bianchi! – Italian/English version

uksubs-djm17-0611251                           I N T R O

(dice ridendo).

Passai infine all'armonica. O al contrario io a lui e non lui a me!... no... scherzo!! (ride ironico).

(dice ironico)

charlie harper iArrivano in ogni modalità.

A.M. - Qual è il tema delle sue canzoni?

Qualsiasi cosa.

Sonic Youth stanno facendo bene...

Lalalala... come si chiama? Una canzone dei Pixies... sono brillanti. Frank Black è un cantante brillante. I cori mi piacciono. Mettere i cori in una canzone. Li suggerisco...

A.M. - Progetti per il futuro?

Stiamo pianificando le date. Facciamo 200 concerti all'anno.

normal_charlie_and_lemmyA.M. - Le piace l'Italia?

A me non piace l'Italia ahahahah... io amo l'Italia!

F.C. - Che ne pensa del cibo italiano?

Cuciniamo cibo italiano a casa. Mia moglie cucina.

A.M. - Se ascolta musica, che musica le piace?

Amo i Clash. Anche i Sonics, i Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin; i Seeds e Neil Young e tutte le band della West Coast, Willy Gauffries, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Debbie Harry, una grande scelta musicale.

A.M. - Ha tempo per ascoltare la musica?

Sì, in bagno ho una radio... io vivo lì!

charlie9F.C.

Gatti e volti i suoi temi in esposizione.

INTERVIEW WITH CHARLIE HARPER (UK SUBS): "Punk rock is white kids blues!"

subs1We meet UK SUBS frontman Charlie Harper, up at Rebellion Festival 2015 in the Art Punk place, rounded by his own painting, drinking many glasses of water. After four scored top 20 albums and seven consecutive top 40 singles, the old nowadays – turqoisecolour aspect guy is still a kid during each gig, excited and surprised of the still alive success.

In a funny interview, let him know a little more...

Florinda Calì (Distorsioni): It's  really a pleasure to meet you today. You are a sort of legend for punk rock today...

Charlie HarperAt the age of 71, you are still playing gigs, still getting in the van and vowed to keep on rocking leading the UK SUBS. You know, I've been promoting... I am an icon now...(laughing looking at me joking). They' ve used to lower me down but now I 'm higher up ahha

FC: Yes, definitly! ( joking with him). How old were you when you started playing?

I started borrowing others people's guitars because I couldn't play properly. I started supplying very young but not playing properly around about 15/16 when I was at school with my friends baskers, free singers and I 've learned from them and I 've started basking myself. I'm going back to those old songs because they were all coming back. You see we were all going down to clubs and see rockabilly bands so I've actually went out and got a reverbeating guitar, the steal guitar that uses a bottle neck, I've picked and it was nice and loud.

I start playing in a rockabilly band and doing also my own songs... I was a teenager

I played blues at first and it's my kind of solo but I do lots of Uk Subs stuff.

FC: What did your family think about your passion for music?

subs2Since I left school and I got a job I've studied saxophone and I've supplied principal basses stuff and my step father tried to stop me playing "too loud, too loud" and bought me a classic guitar but I used to play too loud too for him. I was a trouble maker. And the classic guitar was a trouble too. He wasn't ready for the classic guitar!!

So I ended up play an harmonica. Thats in the Sixties. I was a busker. That's in the Sixties when there were a lot of blues bands and r'n be bands and I played around the harmonica in many blues bands.

By the way Rod Stuart thought me how to play armonica or the other way round.....i thought him....no...just joking, he was a great singer He was a busker too. He was a street singer. And then before he was a singer in a band, he was armonica player too but he did sing only a couple of songs with harmonica..... he was a better singer, he is a very very good singer

Alessio Mazzocchi (Distorsioni) - So you started with a very different kind of music...

No, no.. it's not different!  Blues and r'n'b is like punk, it's the same thing, really similar, a parallel. I think Punk rock is white kids blues. I played armonica in Uk Subs too since the off and just changed the sound of the band. All our fans loved it and even our producer wanted us to play the armonica in certain songs and sometimes we had to make up an armonica song with my guitar in 2 minutes. Or better it's not a parallel, it's the same thing. You can ride a blues song in two minutes so you can ride punk rock in two minutes!

FC: In two minute?! Not everybody!

OK ... but if you take too much time you put too many rules in a song and it becomes a pop song ...

subs3AM: What comes first music or lyrics?

It can comes in any way. You can be pissing in a toilet... and a song would come in my head... It's funny because there's a lot of confortables stuffs in the bathroom and I've made a song in the bathroom called bathroom arise. When you are in the bathroom you are taking the shit or you are shaving...in a kind of peace with the world. Having sheet it's like yoga, it's relaxing, and you start your immagination heaching your head.

Not songs but ideas about life comes in your head in the bathroom. Not propelly songs but bathroom messages. You can find much sense in the bathroom then maybe in the Bible....no.. Bible doesn't sense at all it's a fairytale

AM:  What tour song speak about?

Everything. All kind of life. Maybe about boys and girls situations. Boys leaves girls, a boy loves girl or girl loves boy... girl... ..the government... not about Prime Minister... (laugh)...yes, we have song about the Prime Minister! (laughing), it's true. Its all from the bottom to the top.

FC: What's the name of the band? Is UK Subversive the original name?

No. The name of the band  is always been UK SUBS and it's not a summery  ( a submarine!) as many people think. UK SUBS is the name and not a summery to  spare the t- shirt inky! ahahaah

AM:  If there is, what's the difference between punk of 77 and Punk today?

We are all 40 years older, that's the difference! Nowaday there are al lot of new bands very interesting like R M I or A- M- I,  my grandchild  (Marley Perez, rhythm guitar and voice) band ... I think they could be the future of rock and roll. Many young bands play hard and fast and to me it's just rock and roll. I don't write songs thinking  this is a punk song...

When a punk come along it should have a mission and it should be make a sense, it doesn't matter if it is a slow or a fast song. In fact a song very poular as Warhead is a pretty slow song... people accepts anything but it must make a sense,

subsFC: What's your favourite song?

It must be Warhead. It's a plesure have such a base of thousands and thousand people sing backing you. It's amazing. It becomes part of the song: You are doing the direction over the top of them and  they knows the melody, they knows the rythm...and people becomes part of the band. Amazing!

AM:  How do you feel when you are on the stage?

It's amazing...Kids jump in the pit. A good version of Ramones...it has always surprised us and the band don't know...I want to fly!

FC: What do you suggest to a new band?

Don't do little things. Life is very simple, if you love what you 're doing. It's a week I don't touch a guitar and maybe I write another song now. Now I am a painter and I have a new point of view... There a few american band ... Sonic Youth are doing good...lalalaa...Where is my mind?  The song.... A Pixies's song.... They are brilliant! Frank Black is a great singer. Backing vocals I like backing vocals. Put backing vocals in a song, I suggest them...It's another member of a band. For example The Buzzcocks last night ... a lot of inspiration a lot of kind of reverbs, delays... really amazing... the master of backing vocals...I forgot everyone else when I listen to them and I got in the haupt stage.

AM: projects for the future?

We are going to book . We got 200 gigs a year. We are going to Wacked festivals and  I would come back to Italy so we are going to book in Milan, Reggia Emilia, too. We had been in Bologna and in Reggio Emilia. In Bologna no one comes.. Maybe the ads was not enough good.

subs4AM: Do you like Italy?

I don't like Italy.. ahahah  I love Italy! I have been many times in Italy also for holidays, in Tuscany, in Sicily and food was so amazing. I like Swiss, Germany... and I like West Europe but there are horrible hotels

FC: What about italian food?

We cook Italian food at home. My wife cooks. Seafod salad, frutti di mare, and all the food from Neaples

AM: If you listen to music, what the music do you like ?

I love the Clash. And Sonics, Pixies; Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin; The Seeds and Neil Young and all the West Coast bands, Willy Gauffries, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Debbie Harry, a great range of music

AM:  Do you have time to listen to music?

Yes, In the bathroom I have a radio. ...I live there!

FC: What about Rebellion Festival?

subs5The best Festival ever. It's very brilliant. Next will be the 20TH  and we only missed one.

AM: Projects for the future ?

Next album, a cd, an e.p and singles. We are going to realize a documentary in dvd , a film with music. We want to finish our tour.

FC:  The refugees... what do you think about refugees situation?

I speak in my songs about Slavery and the traffic of human beings .

The situation is really incredible in Africa, in Syria and Iraq and a lot of people are dying.

It's like the 3rd world war because people are going for the politician and religion is just an excuse. Thing must change through the music. Music  can do something for  this... I will do something for this!
